Herman Community Park Receives USTA Grant

On August 14, 2014 representatives from the Northern Michigan District of the United States Tennis Association visited Suttons Bay Township to formally acknowledge the USTA Facilities Grant Award of $15,000. The funding will be used for windscreens, message boards and small shade structures for the new courts.

Attending representatives included Mr. Steve Witte and Ms. Ruth Smith. Steve is the current President Northern Michigan Tennis Association, NMI District USTA; Ruth is the current USTA/NMI District League Coordinator.

Township Representatives included Mr. Pete Ostrowski, Ms. Kristen Wilson and Mr. William Drozdalski. Pete is a member of the Township Parks and Recreation Committee and chairs the local tennis sub-committee. Kristen has recently moved to our area and is USPTA Certified, USTA. Kristen has been active in hosting the many youth and adult  tennis clinics at Herman Park this summer. William is the Township Trustee and also serves on the Parks & Recreation Committee.

The USTA representatives were very outspoken on the quality of the new courts and the public interest in tennis that it has generated in such a short period of time. They are looking forward to the growth of tennis in the area and are anticipating the formation of the” Leelanau Community Tennis Association” which is currently in progress and is seeking membership from the entire Leelanau County Area
