In celebration of the Fed Cup competition coming to Cleveland, Ohio, three Cleveland area tennis facilities conducted Play Days this past weekend, January 24-26, to help generate excitement and awareness about the prestigious event to take place Feb. 8-9 at the Cleveland Public Auditorium.
More than 100 young kids participated in the three events; Chagrin Valley Athletic Club hosted 48 participants, the Towpath Tennis Center hosted 23, and the LaTuchie Tennis Center hosted 30. Participants enjoyed playing tennis, eating pizza, and all received a commemorative t-shirt designed by Fed Cup T-shirt design contest winner, 10 year old Cannan Sellers from Rockville, Ind.
The Play Days are the first of several community events planned in the Cleveland area in celebration of Fed Cup. Beginning Feb. 5, the USTA/Midwest Section and the Northeastern Ohio District will be hosting several events at local schools and other venues with the goal of growing excitement and interest in the game. Team USA plans to make special appearances, one of which is a visit to the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.
Cleveland was selected to host the 2014 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas First Round between the U.S. and Italy. The Fed Cup is the world’s largest annual international women’s team competition, with 96 countries entered for 2014.
