Tim & Tom Gullikson Scholarship
Congratulations to Michelle Legatzke and Luke Hochgesang for being selected as the two recipients of the 2014 Tim & Tom Gullikson USTA/Midwest Section Scholarship.
Legatzke has played varsity tennis all four years at Geneseo High School in Geneseo, Ill. She is a team co-captain and tennis state qualifier. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Legatzke participates in the USTA Junior Team Tennis program in her community. Off the tennis court, Legatzke was an Illinois State Scholar and AP Scholar. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and was involved with the Foreign Language Club at her school. Legatzke plans to study engineering when she attends Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., this coming fall.
Hochgesang has played varsity tennis all four years at Jasper High School in Jasper, Ind. He is a team captain, team state finalist, and named to the All-Conference team. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Hochgesang participates in the USTA Junior Team Tennis program in his community. Off the tennis court, Hochgesang was involved all four years in his high school’s Student Council. He is a member of the National Honor Society. Hochgesang volunteers his time at a local hospital, and co-founded a youth mentor program at a local school serving at-risk youth. He plans to study engineering when he attends Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., this coming fall.
This scholarship was established in January 1998 to recognize Tim and Tom Gullikson and to reward youth players with funding to advance their educational and tennis interests. Each year, a $2,500 scholarship is presented to one female and one male junior tennis player from the USTA/Midwest Section. The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to those who have demonstrated financial need and have shown ability, aptitude and promise as students and as tennis players.
Hooked on Tennis Scholarship
Congratulations to Abigail Shonk and Luke Tsai for being selected as the two recipients of the 2014 Hooked on Tennis USTA/Midwest Section Scholarship.
Shonk has played varsity tennis all four years at St. Clair High School in St. Clair, Mich. She is a team captain, and was named to the All Area and All State teams. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Shonk participated in the USTA’s Competition Training Center program in her community. She also competed in the 2013 USTA/Midwest Section Marian Wood Baird Cup which brings together the top 18-and-under female players. Shonk is a member of the National Honor Society at her school. Shonk has volunteered to give back to tennis by helping with a local middle school team. She plans to attend Saginaw State University this coming fall majoring in elementary special education. Shonk also plans to play collegiate tennis.
Tsai has played varsity tennis all four years at Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. Tsai has been a tennis state qualifier. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Tsai also competes in USTA tournaments, and finished the 2013 year ranked No. 20 in the USTA/Midwest Section Boys’ 18 singles division. Off the tennis court, Tsai was a National Merit Scholar and AP Scholar. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. Tsai plans to attend the University of Chicago this coming fall majoring in economics. He also plans to play collegiate tennis.

The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to those who have demonstrated financial need and have shown ability, aptitude and promise as students and as tennis players.
Rick Van Horn Scholarship
Congratulations to Luke Groene for being selected as the 2014 Rick Van Horn USTA/Midwest Section Scholarship.
Groene has played varsity tennis three years at Elder High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Groene is currently the captain of his tennis team. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, he also competes in USTA tournaments. He also was a member of his high school’s club basketball team for four years. Groene has volunteered with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission helping with its summer tennis programs. He plans to attend Transylvania University in the fall, major in business with a concentration in sports management, and play collegiate tennis. Off the tennis court, Groene is a member of the National Honor Society. He is active in his school’s Key Club and Ping Pong Club.
This scholarship was established by the MYTEF in 2008. Each year, a $500 scholarship will be presented to one junior tennis player from the USTA/Midwest Section. The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to those with a passion to work in the tennis industry, have demonstrated financial need, and have shown ability and aptitude as students and as tennis players.
