Tim & Tom Gullikson Scholarship
Congratulations to Monica Lin and Branden Metzler for being selected as the two recipients of the 2013 Tim & Tom Gullikson USTA/Midwest Section Scholarship.
Lin hails from Schaumburg, Ill. She played varsity tennis for two years at Schaumburg High School. Lin is currently ranked in the Top 10 in the USTA/Midwest Section and Chicago District Tennis Association Girls’ 18 Division. She also competed in the 2011 USTA/Midwest Section Marian Wood Baird Cup. Her team representing the Chicago District Tennis Association captured the 2011 cup title, and this competition brings together the top 18-and-under female players from around the USTA/Midwest Section. Off the tennis court, Lin is an Illinois State Scholar for two years. She also received a National Merit letter of commendation. Lin is a match tutor at her high school’s academic center. Lin volunteers her time in the community including helping at a local food bank. Lin plans to study biology and pre-med when she attends Harvard College this coming fall, and also play collegiate tennis.
Metzler is a native from Rockford, Ill. He has played varsity tennis all four years at Auburn High School. He is a three-time defending Northern Illinois Conference champion, and named the Northern Illinois Conference Tennis Most Valuable Player the last two years. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Metzler previously participated in the Northern Illinois Tennis Association Competition Training Center for the District’s top junior players. Off the tennis court, Metzler was involved for two years in his high school’s Global Economic Summit. Metzler has volunteered to give back to tennis as an instructor in a local program. He plans to study biology and chemistry when he attends the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay this coming fall, and play collegiate tennis.
This scholarship was established in January 1998 to recognize Tim and Tom Gullikson and to reward youth players with funding to advance their educational and tennis interests. Each year, a $2,500 scholarship is presented to one female and one male junior tennis player from the USTA/Midwest Section. The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to those who have demonstrated financial need and have shown ability, aptitude and promise as students and as tennis players.
Hooked on Tennis Scholarship
Congratulations to Brenna Wu and Nicholas Lang for being selected as the two recipients of the 2013 Hooked on Tennis USTA/Midwest Section Scholarship.
Wu is a native from Evansville, Ind. She plays varsity tennis at Reitz Memorial High School. She is a three-time member of the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. Wu was also named to the All-District First Team and All-State First Doubles Team. Wu and her team are three-time Southern Indiana Athletic Conference Team champions. In 2012, Wu and her teammates were the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Tennis Champions. Wu is a recipient of the Wendy’s Heisman Award. Off the tennis court, Wu is a member of the National Honor Society, and has received All-City Academic honors. She is active in her school’s Key Club and Drama Club as well as Teens For Life initiative. Wu has volunteered working with a local tennis program, and has served as a ball person for the local USTA Pro Circuit event each summer. Wu has received an athletic scholarship to play collegiate tennis at the University of Southern Indiana this fall while majoring in kinesiology.
Lang hails from West Chester, Ohio. He has played varsity tennis all four years at Lakota West High School. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Lang also competes in USTA tournaments and a local tennis travel club. Off the tennis court, Lang received the Greater Miami Conference All-Academic Award. He is a member of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Patient Advisory Council, and volunteers in various capacities during the summer at the hospital. Lang has volunteered as a tennis instructor with a local program. Lang plans to attend college this coming fall majoring in health services leading to an advanced degree in physical therapy, and play collegiate tennis.

The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to those who have demonstrated financial need and have shown ability, aptitude and promise as students and as tennis players.
Rick Van Horn Scholarship
Congratulations to Jacob Groce for being selected as the 2013 Rick Van Horn USTA/Midwest Section Scholarship.
Groce hails from Austinburg, Ohio. He has played varsity tennis all four years at Geneva High School. Groce was named First Team All-County the past three years, named his team’s Most Valuable Player last year, and awarded his team’s Golden Racquet Award. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, he also competed in the USTA Jr. Team Tennis program and USTA tournaments. Also, he was a member of his high school’s golf team for two years. Off the tennis court, Groce is a member of the National Honor Society. He has also been named a Scholar Athlete. Groce is active in his school’s Spanish Club and Student Club, Class Steering Committee, and Project Love. Groce volunteers as a tennis instructor at a local tennis club. He plans to attend Methodist University in the fall, major in marketing with a concentration in professional tennis management, and play collegiate tennis.
This scholarship was established by the MYTEF in 2008. Each year, a $500 scholarship will be presented to one junior tennis player from the USTA/Midwest Section. The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to those with a passion to work in the tennis industry, have demonstrated financial need, and have shown ability and aptitude as students and as tennis players.
