Junior Recreation

Junior Recreation programs include those entry level lesson, tournament, and fun play programs that are not all about rankings and points!  There are programs at most year round indoor clubs that fall into these categories as well as through many of the park and recreation departments and community tennis associations during the spring through fall seasons outdoors.

New for 2009 are 10 & Under Quick Start Tournaments. These are sanctioned events using lighter balls and a shortened court.  Watch for new tournaments to appear on the schedule of sanctioned tournaments in the near future. USTA Midwest has grants available for organizations wishing to run Quickstart 10 & under tournaments!Junior recreational programs also include Schools Tennis (taught during PE periods by physical education teachers trained by the USTA), as well as after school programs that may occur throughout the year based in the gymnasium or cafetorium of the schools.  Recreational tennis, year round, is all about having fun, enjoying tennis, and getting exercise!

One of the hottest recreational tournament formats hitting this area is through the Gateway Tennis Grand Prix, run in our area by Warren San Luis, tennis@jrgrandprix.com.  These events are usually held one afternoon or evening at clubs throughout the greater Chicagoland area, including locations within the NITA District, and give players a variety of opponents in one session without commiting an entire weekend to a tournament.  This program originated in the Gateway City, St. Louis, but has spread to the Chicagoland area and currently serves hundreds of players locally.  For more detailed information on the Gateway Tennis Jr. Grand Prix, follow this link.  To review all of the local opportunities available, be sure to click on the logo on the left side of the page that says "Gateway Tennis - Chicago".

Warren San Luis and the Northern Illinois District Tennis Association have cooperated in an effort to promote and distribute information on recreational tennis programs throughout the area, including the Gateway Jr. Tennis Grand Prix as well as USTA Junior Team Tennis. It's all about providing more great opportunities for kids who love to play tennis!
