Special Olympics affords players with intellectual disabilities the opportunities to learn and compete in a variety of sports, including tennis. Players may participate and advance to regional, state, national, and Summer or Winter World Games, depending on the sport.
Recently the Special Olympics World Summer Games were held in Shanghai, China. Illinois was represented in tennis by the USA Head Coach, Nancy Hoekstra from Homewood, IL, and Illinois officials John Coleman, Downer's Grove, Pam Delnagro, Algonquin, and former athlete John Fadich, Tinley Park were all on hand to work at the games.
Team USA consisted of only six players from the US, but they were full of enthusiasm and ready for the adventure. Some of the competition pictures below will give you a feel for the games and how incredible the Special Olympics organization is for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
